District offers alternative path to become a substitute teacher
Grow your own substitute
The Natrona County School District is offering the Grow Your Own Substitute Program, which is an alternative path to receiving a substitute permit. A high school diploma or GED, 30 hours of class time and 30 hours of observation time are all that are required to participate in this alternative path.
The cost is $75, and that includes all materials. At the completion of the training, details of which are listed below, if an applicant has become accepted and has substituted for 30 days before Dec. 18, 2009, the $75 will be reimbursed. In order to obtain certification, per the state of Wyoming, additional fees include $50 for fingerprints and $50 for the substitute permit.
The required classes are as follows:
Friday, Jan. 30, 5 to 8 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 31, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Friday, Feb. 6, 5 to 8 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 7, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Friday, Feb. 27, 5 to 8 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 28, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The expectation is that by the Feb. 28 class, applicants will have completed their 30 hours of observation.
After completing the steps listed above, applicants will have their substitute permit, but will still be required to go through the application process with the school district.
